Volunteer role

Canon Researcher

Help build the Afghan Canon — locate, evaluate, and distill centuries of sources on Afghan philosophy, cultural practice, and heritage. Ideal for academics, graduate students, or anyone with serious scholarly curiosity.

About the role

The Afghan Canon is the House of Afghanistan's most ambitious undertaking — a living repository of the philosophical, intellectual, and cultural inheritance of the Afghan people. We are looking for Canon Researchers to help build it.

This role requires rigor, patience, and a genuine desire to understand what has been entrusted to us.

Ideal for: academics, historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, sociologists, cultural scholars, and graduate students (masters or PhD level) with a serious interest in Afghan heritage. Passionate non-academics with demonstrated research ability are also welcome.

What you'll do
  • Locating, evaluating, and cataloguing primary and secondary sources
  • Researching Afghan cultural practices, belief systems, values, and traditions
  • Distilling complex material into accessible, accurate entries for the Canon
  • Collaborating with curators and subject-matter experts to verify findings
  • Contributing to specific Canon volumes (e.g. Cuisine, Philosophy, Language, Music)
